AI-Powered Editing: Letting LLMs Share the Work
I’m never been a fan of AI generated writing or code but, as the tools get more powerful, I’m seeing some great examples how they can provide some legitimate assistance to make the creative life easier.
If you’re doing a lot of writing and could use some help with editing, from catching typos to fact checking, AI and LLMs can be a big help. As a self-published author, one of my biggest challenges is editing my own work and ensuring quality. Beyond simple typos and grammar issues, there are questions of writing clarity and the work involved in editing a long document or even an entire book. Human editors can be expensive and take time and there are no guarantees. Fortunately, now there are free AI tools that can help with the job and, in effect, provide a second or third set of eyes on my work.
I’m using Google’s NotebookLM to review my upcoming book on SQLite. Once I upload the draft into a new notebook and let the LLM analyze it, I can then ask specific questions based on the text to see what has been thoroughly covered and what needs more work. NotebookLM will even highlight and display specific references so I can judge for myself.
ChatGPT is also great for fact-checking although I ran up against my processing limit in the free version that I’m using when I had the crazy idea to ask it to validate all the SQL queries in the book. 😁 One of my least favorite parts of writing a textbook is coming up with test questions and exercises and ChatGPT was able to analyze an individual chapter and suggest exercises that I later adapted.
NotebookLM’s other features such as its ability to generate briefing docs, study guides and F.A.Q.s can also be of help if you’re preparing documentation and presentations. Even the audio overview podcast feature has received some improvements. The tone of the virtual hosts still inspires some eyerolls but you can now tell it what aspects of the materials to focus on and ask questions interactively.
NotebookLM is definitely my favorite A.I. tool from the past year and worth getting familiar with.
